Today is #BellLetsTalk Day - so let’s get the conversation going and work towards ending the stigma around mental health.
According to the Mental Health Commission, on any given week, more than 500 000 Canadians are unable to go to work due to mental health problems.
This year, with COVID-19 affecting every aspect of our lives, Canadians are feeling the impact of the pandemic on their mental health. Now, more than ever, mental health matters and every action counts.
So, what can YOU do?
Recognize the signs of stress in yourself. This can look different for everyone. Do you notice increased fear and worry? Changes in sleep or eating patterns? Difficulty sleeping? Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs?
Take care of yourself. Choose to consume credible media, or take a break entirely. Relax, meditate, stretch, sleep, BREATHE. Connect with others, and accept the support of those close to you. Focus your energy on what you can control, rather than worrying about what you cannot.
Take care of others. When you feel you are in a space to receive, give your loved ones the opportunity to share their feelings, worries, and stressors. You do not need to fix every problem, but your presence, care, and support can make a big difference.
Connect to help. If you or a loved one are struggling, help is available. Many resources are free or low-cost. Check out Wellness Together Canada, CMHA, Kids Help Phone, or contact a regulated healthcare professional to get the ball rolling.
Most importantly, remember you are not alone. We are all in this together!
Crestmont Dental is a proud member of the TREC Dental family, a locally owned and operated group of clinics that believe in giving back in our community and internationally. To support this important initiative, we are helping raise awareness by participating in the BellLetsTalk Self-Care activities and will be making a donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
